About us

The League of Friends of the City Hospital remains separate from the QMC, operating as an independent charity for the benefit of the City Hospital.  The League is run by volunteers – all of the money raised and donated is used entirely for the benefit of the City Hospital.

Duncan Harris DM FRCS (Urol) Consultant Urological Surgeon and Clinical Director
Your generous donation has helped enormously in developing prostate cancer services in the new Urology Centre.
Yvonne Glass CityHospital Chaplain
Not a week goes by without people commenting on the peaceful surroundings of the Chapel.  This would not have been possible without the generous help of the League of Friends.
Cath Henson Clinical Nurse Manager
Once again, on behalf of everyone on the neonatal unit, our heartfelt thanks to the League of Friends.

Meetings and Events

During 2018, in addition to responses to requests for items of equipment for wards and departments across the hospital, we have been pleased to part sponsor the NUH Volunteer Long Service Awards held on 6th June at the Crowne Plaza hotel. We have also part sponsored NUH Staff Long Service Awards, and the Nurse and Midwife of the Year Awards. All of these events are a wonderful celebration of the work of the exceptionally committed and skilled staff working across the NUH.

COMMITTEE MEETINGS are held once per month on Tuesday evenings, when donations received and requests made for support are discussed, as well as ideas and arrangements for fund-raising and other activity.

Our AGM was held on 9th October 2018, when our main speaker, Laura Skaife-Knight, Director of Communications and External Relations, gave a very comprehensive overview of developments within NUH.

We are repeating our very successful QUIZ as a fundraising activity, on Monday 11th March 2019, 7.00 for 7.30 pm at the Salvation Army Hall in Arnold. All funds raised will be used to support items requested by the City Hospital. Tickets, £7 each to include light refreshments, are available from Barbara McDonald, tel 0115 9757800 or bmcdonald351@btinternet.com.

The annual LACE MARKET THEATRE event will be held on Tuesday 23rd July 2019 at 7.30 pm. The performance this year is Richard Harris’ STEPPING OUT, described as ‘shambolic amateurs putting any foot forward’. Tickets, £14 each to include nibbles and a prize draw, can be purchased from Carole Brown, tel: 0115 9261299 or carole90brown:gmail.com.

Our SUMMER LUNCH WITH SPEAKER on 7th August 2018 was a great success. The speaker, Paul Newham, gave a most interesting and entertaining presentation taking us through “The Streets of London” via the monopoly board. We plan to repeat this event, same speaker different subject, in August 2019. More information to follow.

The ANNUAL CONCERT was held on Saturday 3rd November 2018 at Arnold Methodist Church and we enjoyed another varied performance of music and prose from the BLUECOAT CHOIR. As usual, all funds raised were used entirely for the benefit of the staff and patients at the City Hospital.
